 Arava
/ Leflunomide
A prescription drug used for
agressive treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
to reduce the symptoms
and slow joint damage.
FDA approved in 1998 with
the statement that it worked no better than
the older drug already
on the market, methotrexate. It is estimated
that over 1.5 million prescriptions have
been written in the US. It is now required
to have
safety warnings regarding “life-threatening
liver toxicity and infections” as potential
side effects.
FDA data, as of 2001, shows
that Arava
had been involved with up to 130 cases
of severe liver
damage, including 56 hospitalizations and 12
deaths, Llymphoma and drug-induced
hypertension in people treated with Arava as
well as serious
skin, blood and gastrointestinal reactions
have also been reported.
Arava side effects include: diarrhea, hair loss
and more serious problems such as the risk of
liver damage and high blood pressure.
Serious side effects include:
• Yellow Eyes and/or Skin
• Chest Congestion
• Painful Urination
• Difficult or Painful Breathing
• Dizziness
• Fever
• Headache
• Loss of Appetite
• Nausea and/or Vomiting
• Sneezing, Coughing, or Sore Throat
Arava has recently been linked to an unusually
high number of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, an
auto-immune disease that is often fatal.
Steven-Johnsons Syndrome is a complex immune
disorder where the patient's own immune system
attacks the joint cartilidge and can cause
lesions in the mouth, eyes, and body.
