Benzene

Benzene is a highly flammable chemical used to make rubber, plastics, dyes, paints, detergents, lubricants, drugs, pesticides, nylon and more. Unfortunately it is known to cause cancer in humans. It is a naturally occurring compound of gasoline, crude oil and cigarette smoke.

Though Benzene can be found all around us, its most common sources of everyday exposure are cigarette smoke, gas stations and vehicle exhaust. Benzene gases are emitted from glues, paints, furniture wax and detergents. Exposure in cities is more intense than in rural areas. Those who live near landfills, hazardous waste sites or where gasoline may seep from underground storage tanks are all at risk of being poisoned by the chemical through the water and in the air.

Its effects due to brief exposure (5-10 minutes) may be headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, rapid heart rate, vomiting, tremors, confusion, and unconsciousness. Exposure to very high levels can cause death.

When benzene enters the bloodstream the body stores it temporarily in bone marrow and fat, then converts it into metabolites. These metabolites are believed to be the source of leukemia and cancer caused by benzene exposure.

The following have high risk factors:

• Workers in petroleum refineries
• Gasoline distribution workers
• Rubber tire manufacturers
• Laboratory technicians
• Shoe / leather workers
• Newspaper
• Pesticides manufacturing workers
• Painters
• Printers
• Press workers
• Paper and pulp manufacturing workers

Lawsuits
If you or a member of your family has been injured by Benzene, you may have grounds to file a lawsuit. Injuries from Benzene include, but are not limited to, headaches, diziness, drowsiness, rapid heart rate, vomiting, tremors, confusion, unconsiousness, cancer, and death as outlined above.
